Lewisham's East Area

Lewisham’s East Area, with its continuous stretch of green spaces running from the riverside and Blackheath to Elmstead Wood in the south, has a suburban feel comprising a series of historic villages - Blackheath, Lee and Grove Park - originally built along the route to Greenwich. The vision

By 2040, the abundant green space jewelled with the open expanses of Blackheath and its historic village will be preserved and enhanced, strengthening this part of the borough as a visitor destination with broad appeal across Lewisham, London and the South East.

Town and local centres will be strengthened with the redevelopment of Leegate Shopping Centre acting as a catalyst for the renewal of Lee Green. Burnt Ash, Staplehurst Road and Grove Park will continue to serve their neighbourhoods supported with public space improvements at station approaches.

What will the Local Plan mean for this area?

The Local Plan sets out proposed approaches to help achieve the vision and objectives, which include:

  • Place-based policies for different neighbourhoods and topic areas
  • Site allocations, setting out our expectations for the use of land and design of development on specific sites
  • Have your say

Read the East Area Overview and the Summary Document for an overview of the objectives and place-based policies. Full details, including site allocations, are set out in the Local Plan: Main Issues and Preferred Approaches document.
