Lewisham's West Area

Lewisham’s West Area is hilly with green spaces evolved from the Great North Wood. It features a collection of older villages developed along railway lines including the neighbourhoods of Telegraph Hill, Brockley, Ladywell, Crofton Park, Honor Oak, Blythe Hill, Forest Hill, Sydenham and Sydenham Hill. The vision

By 2040, town and local centres with their historic streets, long views and woodland character will be revitalised to encourage local people to spend time and enjoy the community spaces.

New genuinely affordable homes and workspaces for micro and small businesses will be built along the main corridors of Brockley Road and Stanstead Road (South Circular, A205) and significant numbers of new jobs will be generated with employment space created on key industrial sites and in district centres. Forest Hill will develop a lively Cultural Quarter building on the appeal of the Horniman Museum and Gardens and creative studios at Havelock Walk.

Public space improvements on the approaches to train stations and key routes such as Ladywell Road, Sydenham Road and Dartmouth Road will make it easier to walk and cycle, encouraging local living.

What will the Local Plan mean for this area?

The Local Plan sets out proposed approaches to help achieve the vision and objectives, which include:

  • Place-based policies for different neighbourhoods and topic areas
  • Site allocations, setting out our expectations for the use of land and design of development on specific sites
  • Have your say

Read the West Area Overview and the Summary Document for an overview of the objectives and place-based policies. Full details, including site allocations, are set out in the Local Plan: Main Issues and Preferred Approaches document.
